Discussion:
[Rock-dev] rock-users vs robotics.stackexchange.com

Jakob asked on robotics.stackexchange.com if we could use it for Rock
questions. The answer was "yes".
http://meta.robotics.stackexchange.com/questions/228/using-robotics-sx-for-our-robotics-software-framework

So, what should we use / promote ? rock-users or
robotics.stackexchange.com? Having both seem a bit too much to me...

My vote:
-1 to have both
+1 stackexchange

My vote:
+1 stackexchange

Thomas is on holidays and I think he would like to take part in the
decision.

I just set up a first question and added a rock tag. (I don't have tag editing
rights, so we'll have to wait for the description until its reviewed)
http://robotics.stackexchange.com/q/2882/127

There is a feature to send questions for a specific tag to an email address. We
could set it up to send to rock-users. Its a good way to get notified as well.
Also, not all questions are fit for the stackexchange format, and they can
sometimes be quite strict about deleting question. For this reason, I would vote
to have both. By linking them through the notification feature I think it could
work.

cheers,

Jakob

I would really not forward SE questions to the ML, as one cannot answer the
question by answering the emails. So, in the end it is noise on the ML and
does not benefit the SE discussions.

I would prefer having either SE or the ML and only add the other one if
there indeed is a problem. If there are open-ended discussions, maybe we
could still make them on rock-dev (as long as there is not too many of them
...)

To me this would be similar to the issue tracking mails we get from track. I like those, and don't consider them noise.

rock-dev should imho stay as it is. I thought the discussion was on rock-users.
Announcements from sx would also only go to rock-users.

From a "strategic" point of view, SE would give some visibility to rock, so I
would like to favor it.
I agree. But I don't see why having rock-users as some sort of announce list would harm that point.
It also allows to ask questions that don't fit the sx format, and have discussions, which is also not allowed on sx.

I don't see a harm in using both, If we see it creates problems, we can always close rock-users and tell everyone to only use sx.

Cheers,

Jakob

Discussions about answers to a specific question *are* allowed. What is not
allowed is an open-ended question.
Given our track record of discussions, they are likely to be open ended... :)

Removing is always a lot harder than adding. There are always people that
will get more used to mails than SX and therefore will push back against its
removal.
IMO, having both will lead to confusion: "I have a question to ask, should I do
it on SX or on rock-users ?" which reduces the usefulness of both (since SX
won't have the mails, you can't use it to check if your question was already
asked).
How about this: ask all questions directly on SX as a policy, and use the ML as an announce system for the questions and other things. E.g. new features, releases, issues. And things that clearly don't belong on SX. ML is also nice, because you can see who we are reaching with rock.

Cheers,

Jakob

That's more or less what I also had in mind in my last email ...

But rock-users sounds like a bad name to me. Would rock-talk sound fine ?
